ChatGPT Classic retires on January 30, 2027 as OpenAI merges Chat and Work

By Hamza ·

The ChatGPT Classic desktop app shuts down in January, and OpenAI will soon test a single interface for conversation and advanced tasks.

According to 9to5Mac, people using the ChatGPT Classic app now see a message saying it will retire on January 30, 2027. The message says your full chat history moves with you to the new ChatGPT app. iThinkDifferent reports that the new app is available for Mac and Windows on every plan, including Free.

Separately, OpenAI has told users it will spend the coming weeks testing one interface that combines Chat and Work, starting with a small group. The aim is to go from exploring an idea to carrying it out in the same place: you add your files and plugins, then ask for a website, a presentation or actions on the web while you review and guide the work. Codex stays a separate experience inside the app.

The company also plans a shared usage allowance for ChatGPT and Codex in place of separate limits. It says most users won’t wait for a reset more often than they do today. Advanced models and complex tasks will use more of the allowance, while Instant stays unlimited and doesn’t count against it.

What it means for you

If your business runs through ChatGPT every day, it is better to prepare now than to be caught out in January.

  • Move early: if you use Classic, download the new app from the ChatGPT downloads page and check that your important chats appear there.
  • Try a real task: if Work is available on your account, ask it for a presentation of your project or a simple page, and review the result step by step.
  • Protect your allowance: use Instant for simple questions and save advanced models for tasks that truly need them.
