Moroccan customs recovers 730 million dirhams with AI: what it means for importers

By Hamza ·

Control units cross-checked the declared values of imported goods with data analysis and collected extra duties from dozens of importers.

According to Hespress (1 November 2026), Moroccan customs control units used AI and data analysis to check the declared values of imported goods. The result: about 730 million dirhams in additional duties collected from dozens of importers, mostly in Casablanca, Tangier and Agadir.

The checks covered invoices, shipping documents and bank transfers, and some cases are still under review. Sources stress that a price gap alone is not proof of deliberate fraud.

What it means for you

Authorities can now compare millions of data points in seconds. If you import goods for an online store or business, an invoice that doesn’t match the real price is easy to spot.

  • Keep every document: invoice, original quote and proof of bank transfer for each shipment.
  • Benchmark your prices: if your price is far below market, be ready to justify it (discount, bulk order, clearance).
  • Use AI on your side: ask an assistant to review your import file and list missing documents before the goods arrive.

The bigger lesson: AI is no longer just for large companies; it is part of how administrations work. Understanding it early avoids surprises.
